Big Tech VS Free Speech ?
The end of Section 230 may be the key!

Please Donate to https://fundly.com/stopthebias

Together we can bring attention to the social media censorship and hold these monopolies to the exemption they have hid behind.

It’s no longer a question of whether the Giant Social Media Companies – Google, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. – have become too powerful. They’ve matured to the point that they can actually affect what people see, read, listen to and even what See More they think. To make matters worse, they’ve decided that they will use these powers to change voting patterns and to Censor speech that opposes their political beliefs.

It’s time to stop them before all is lost. Harmeet Dhillon (Attorney Suing Google and Republican Party Official) has been on Tucker Carlson’s show frequently of late and she warns,

“Trump won’t win in 2020 and we will never win another election if we don’t stop this!”

One of the most likely ways for Congress to stop them would be to revise Section 230 of the Communications and Decency Act (CDA) that provides a special exemption from liability for content that is posted on their platforms. This exemption was initially extended to them because they claimed that their platforms would be a place for people from all points of view to post their ideas. Given their current Censorship actions, we all know that is no longer the case.

Consequently, the Social Media Platforms should be subjected to the possibility that they be responsible for all content that is posted on their sites since they selectively publish just as the New York Times or Washington Post do. In fairness, then, the Social Media Platforms should bear the same risk of liability for their content as other publishers.

This move would, of course, destroy their business model so they would be likely to change the Censorship tactics they use against Conservatives in order to avoid any changes to Section 230 of the CDA.

Alternatively, the threat of Antitrust Litigation is another avenue that may get their attention. The government should apply the same techniques against these Social Media Giants as they used to bring Microsoft to heel.

Our goal is to see our leaders pursue these remedies before it’s too late!

The 1996 law that made the web is in the crosshairs

Internet companies have long been shielded from legal responsibility for toxic user content by the Section 230 statute. Now that they’re huge, rich, and behaving badly, that gift could be taken away.

In the face of that toxic content’s intractability and the futility of the tech giants’ attempts to deal with it, it’s become a mainstream belief in Washington, D.C.–and a growing realization in Silicon Valley–that it’s no longer a question of whether to, but how to, regulate companies like Google, Twitter, and Facebook to hold them accountable for the content on their platforms. One of the most likely ways for Congress to do that would be to revise Section 230.

UNDERSTANDING SECTION 230

Section 230 remains a misunderstood part of the law. As Wyden explained it to me, the statute provides both a “shield” and a “sword” to internet companies. The “shield” protects tech companies from liability for harmful content posted on their platforms by users. To wit:

(c) (1) No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.

Specifically, it relieves web platform operators of liability when their users post content that violates state law by defaming another person or group, or painting someone or something in a false light, or publicly disclosing private facts. Section 230 does not protect tech companies from federal criminal liability or from intellectual property claims.

“Because content is posted on their platforms so rapidly there’s just no way they can possibly police everything,” Senator Wyden told me.

The “sword” refers to the 230’s “good samaritan” clause, which gives tech companies legal cover for choices they make when moderating user content. Before § 230, tech companies were hesitant to moderate content for fear of being branded “publishers” and thus made liable for toxic user content on their sites. Per the clause:

(c) (2) (a) No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be held liable on account of any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected

“I wanted to make sure that internet companies could moderate their websites without getting clobbered by lawsuits,” Wyden said on the House floor back in March. “I think everybody can agree that’s a better scenario than the alternative, which means websites hiding their heads in the sand out of fear of being weighed down with liability.”

Many lawmakers, including Wyden, feel the tech giants have been slow to detect and remove harmful user content, that they’ve used the legal cover provided by § 230 to avoid taking active responsibility for user content on their platforms.

And by 2016 the harmful content wasn’t just hurting individuals or businesses, but whole societies. Social sites like YouTube became unwitting recruiting platforms for violent terrorist groups. Russian hackers weaponized Facebook to spread disinformation, which caused division and rancor among voters, and eroded confidence in the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

As Wyden pointed out on the floor of the Senate in March, the tech giants have even profited from the toxic content.

“Section 230 means they [tech companies] are not required to fact-check or scrub every video, post, or tweet,” Wyden said. “But there have been far too many alarming examples of algorithms driving vile, hateful, or conspiratorial content to the top of the sites millions of people click onto every day –companies seeming to aid in the spread of this content as a direct function of their business models.”

And the harm may get a lot worse. Future bad actors may use machine learning, natural language, and computer vision technology to create convincing video or audio footage depicting a person doing or saying something provocative that they didn’t really do or say. Such “Deepfake” content, skillfully created and deployed with the right subject matter at the right time, could cause serious harm to individuals, or even calamitous damage to whole nations. Imagine a deep-faked president taking to Twitter to declare war on North Korea.

It’s a growing belief in Washington in 2018 that tech companies might become more focused on keeping such harmful user content off of their platforms if the legal protections provided in § 230 were taken away.

SHIELDING GIANTS

There’s a real question over whether Wyden’s “shield” still fits. Section 230 says web companies won’t be treated as publishers, but they look a lot more like publishers in 2018 than they did in 1996.

In 1996 websites and services often looked like digital versions of real-world things. Craigslist was essentially a digital version of the classifieds. Prodigy offered an internet on-ramp and some bulletin boards. GeoCities let “homesteaders” build pages that were organized (by content type) in “neighborhoods” or “cities.”

Over time the dominant business models changed. Many internet businesses and publishers came to rely on interactive advertising for income, a business model that relied on browser tracking and the collection of users’ personal data to target ads.

To increase engagement, internet companies began “personalizing” their sites so that each user would have a different and unique experience, tailor-made to their interests. Websites became highly curated experiences served up by algorithms. And the algorithms were fed by the personal data and browsing histories of users.

Facebook came along in 2004 and soon took user data collection to the next level. The company provided a free social network, but harvested users’ personal data to target ads to them on Facebook and elsewhere on the web. And the data was very good. Not only could Facebook capture all kinds of data about a user’s tastes, but it could capture the user’s friends’ tastes too. This was catnip to advertisers because the social data proved to be a powerful indicator of what sorts of ads the user might click on.

Facebook also leveraged its copious user data, including that on the user’s clicks, likes, and shares, to inform the complex algorithms that curate the content in users’ news feeds. It began showing users the posts, news, and other content that the user–based on their personal tastes–was most likely to respond to. This put more attention-grabbing stuff in front of its users’ eyeballs, which pumped up engagement and created more opportunities to show ads.

This sounds a lot like the work of a publisher. “Our goal is to build the perfect personalized newspaper for every person in the world,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in 2014.

But Facebook has always been quick to insist that it’s not a publisher, just a neutral technology platform. There’s a very good reason for that: Publishers are liable for the content

William Barr targets Russia investigators; Wall Street looks for rebound in US-China tariff war

Barr targets Russia investigators
Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection efforts targeting the Trump campaign were “lawful and appropriate,” a person familiar with the situation told Fox News on Monday evening. John See More Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, will conduct the inquiry, the source said. The move comes as the Trump administration has pushed for answers on why federal authorities conducted the surveillance — as well as whether Democrats were the ones who improperly colluded with foreign actors.

Feeling China’s revenge? Wall Street looks to rebound
All eyes will be on Wall Street Tuesday after U.S. stocks tumbled on Monday amid escalating trade tension and rhetoric between the U.S. and China. Shares opened moderately lower in Asia on Tuesday after Wall Street’s dismal Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 617 points, recovering from a loss of over 700 points early afternoon. China announced it would hike tariffs on roughly $60 billion in U.S. imports in a retaliation against the Trump administration’s decision last week to increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. Poised to affect over 5,000 U.S. products, the tariffs will range to as high as 25 percent, up from between 5 and 10 percent currently, and take effect on June 1.

Growing tension with North Korea and Iran
The Trump administration is also dealing with tension with both North Korea and Iran, two conflicts that have slowly escalated over the past week. North Korea on Tuesday demanded the U.S. returned a cargo ship used to transport that was seized in violation of international sanctions against the rogue regime, calling it a “robbery.” An unnamed North Korea foreign ministry spokesman accused the U.S. betraying the spirit of last year’s summit agreement between President Trump and Kim Jong Un, according to the country’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Meanwhile, an American military team assessing blasts that damaged four commercial ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday has blamed Iran or Iranian-backed proxies using explosive charges, a source told Fox News on Monday evening. The UAE asked the U.S. to help investigate the damage, which Gulf officials have characterized as sabotage. The U.S. has warned ships that “Iran or its proxies” could be targeting maritime traffic in the region, and America has moved additional ships and aircraft into the region.

Behind the shakeup at Homeland Security
Pushback on a previously secret White House plan to arrest thousands of migrant parents and children in nearly a dozen U.S. cities led to the departures of former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and former Acting ICE Director Ron Vitiello from the Trump administration, Fox News confirmed. The Trump administration wanted to target migrant families that had crossed into the U.S. from Mexico in attempt to show that the U.S. wasn’t going to back down on its border stance by detaining and deporting illegal immigrant families, The Washington Post first reported. Nielsen and Vitiello challenged the administration’s plan, citing lack of preparation, public outrage and worries that the operation could use border resources. These factors were reportedly part of the reason Trump pushed both officials out of the administration.

In response to Alyssa Milano’s ‘sex strike’ …
Author Mark Steyn reacted Monday to actress Alyssa Milano’s “sex strike” – launched in opposition to a new Georgia law that bans abortion after a baby’s heartbeat is detected. Steyn said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that until this point, many pro-choice advocates made claims to the effect of “abstinence education doesn’t work, so we have to have abortion [rights].” “But abstinence apparently does work when Alyssa Milano is commanding it,” he remarked. “We just cannot risk pregnancy. Join me by not having sex,” he said, paraphrasing a recent tweet by Milano.

Dem Rep. Tlaib sparks outrage with comments about Holocaust; Grim clues in search for missing Houston girl

Rep. Tlaib sparks outrage with comments on Holocaust, Palestinians
House Republican leaders on Sunday called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to “take action” against Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., for controversial comments she made about the Holocaust See More during a podcast. “There’s always kind of a calming feeling, I tell folks, when I think of the Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports,” Tlaib said during an appearance on the most recent episode of the Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery.” “And, just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., called Tlaib’s comments “twisted and disgusting.” House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer “to finally take action against Representative Tlaib and other members of the Democratic caucus who are spreading vile anti-Semitism.” Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to Congress, has been accused of anti-Semitism several times since taking office in January. Tlaib’s spokesman accused Republican leaders and right-wing extremists of taking her words out of context to incite hate. Tlaib vowed to not be silenced. “Policing my words, twisting & turning them to ignite vile attacks on me will not work.” Pelosi is facing criticism from some fellow Democrats for allowing a Texas imam with a history of anti-Israel comments to deliver the noon prayer in the House of Representatives last week.

Kudlow: We expect China to retaliate for hiked tariffs
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said he expects China to retaliate against the U.S. after President Trump increased tariffs last week on Chinese goods. “The expected countermeasures have not yet materialized,” Kudlow told “Fox News Sunday.” “[But] Yes, I reckon they will. We will see what they come up with. So far, we haven’t heard on that basis.” The U.S. increased tariffs Friday on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent from 10 percent after trade negotiators from both countries failed to come to an agreement. In addition, Trump called for U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to begin raising tariffs on “essentially all remaining imports from China, which are valued at approximately $300 billion.” Kudlow said trade talks will continue, though there are no set plans yet. The likelihood of Trump meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next month during the G-20 summit in Japan is “pretty good,” he added.

ICYMI: Lindsey Graham pushing to declassify key ‘document’ on Steele dossier
EXCLUSIVE: Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham told “Sunday Morning Futures” that he is working to declassify a sensitive “document” that definitively proves that authorities knew the Steele dossier — which the FBI used to justify the secret surveillance of a former Trump aide — lacked any substantial independent corroboration. Graham also previewed legislation he will introduce on Wednesday to halt what he called the “perfect storm” of illegal immigration that now constitutes an “invasion” at the southern border, and predicted that “90 percent of illegal immigration” from Central America would soon come to an end under his plan.

Grim clues in search for missing Houston girl
Police investigating the disappearance of a four-year-old Houston girl reportedly found drops of what may be her blood in her home and uncovered evidence that someone tried to clean it up. According to the Houston Chronicle, court records reveal that blood was found in the bathroom and a hallway in the apartment where Maleah Davis lives with her mother Brittany Bowens, and her fiancé, Derion Vence. Police used DNA samples from Maleah’s toothbrush to match the blood to a “maternal offspring of Brittany Bowens.” A chemical spray revealed more traces of blood that had been cleaned up at some point in the apartment, police said.

Derion Vance was arrested Saturday and charged with tampering with evidence, specifically a human corpse. Cadaver dogs reacted to the trunk of his silver Nissan Altima, a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said at Vence’s probable cause court hearing. Maleah was reported missing May 3 and police have yet to find her or her body. Vence had told police that three men in a pickup truck abducted him, Maleah and his 2-year-old son before freeing him and the boy. But police said his story inconsistent and kept changing.

Huffman to plead guilty in college admissions scandal
Former ‘Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman is expected to formally plead guiltyin Boston federal court Monday in the college admissions scandal that revealed an elaborate cheating scam involving several wealthy parents and their privileged children. Huffman agreed to plead guilty last month. She was one of the 11 defendants charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud who agreed to plead guilty. Huffman had been accused of paying $15,000 disguised as a tax-deductible charitable donation so her daughter could take part in an apparently rigged college entrance exam. More than four dozen people have been charged in the nationwide scam, which is alleged to have placed students in top-tier schools like Yale, Georgetown, Stanford, the University of Southern California, UCLA and the University of Texas. Actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, are also charged in the scam, but have not reached any plea deals.

Well known Gay Republican Peter Boykin has been Banned From Twitter

@PeterBoykin was Banned From Twitter, 5/10/19 just days before his birthday. He had over 103K followers, including over 1.3K Verified Followers. All of which he lost contacts with many people. He needs your help.

Peter Boykin’s Crime:
being a conservative with too much-growing influence.
We have seen Many notable conservatives banned since Donald Trump was elected in 2016. The Question is when will this stop?

We can See More do NOTHING without there being legislation put in place there must be regulation placed on social media. There is TOO much worldwide influence that comes from these social media monopolies.

Social media is the new Pony Express, Telegraph, Post Office, Telephone Service, Internet, etc.. the new way to communicate with others. It has become a large part of having a business, conducting business, and a tool that is a must-have for a journalist, or for someone like Peter Boykin a news commentator running a radio station and news show as well as a media influencer of which Peter Boykin went to college and obtained a Masters Degree.

Peter Boykin has been told by many a lawyer they don’t see a case, but honestly, some have already sued an won. The answer is not to create a new social media network, nor to jump on a new one every 5 mins. The answer is to correct the ones that are honestly the most powerful ones.

What if Walmart and Target told you to never come back?
What if Major Grocery stores told you never to come back?
What is Microsoft Windows, and Apple OS told people they could not use their OS systems anymore?
What if Androids and Apples told you that you could not use their phones?

Many people say follow the rules that you signed up for and you won’t be banned, but even if you follow the rules they will bend them to ensure you “break them.”

We are living in 1984, we are the thought criminals. Until we find a way we can take this on and make a change we will keep losing.

So what Peter Boykin is wanting to do is raise money to lobby Congress, to reach out to those in power to make a change. The funds will be used to fund to travel to DC and protest, to meet with members of Congress, and help introduce bills to address these issues.

Technology is still the new frontier, laws are written as cases are presented. The more lawyers ignore what is happening the more it will continue and get worse.

At this rate, anyone discovered gaining influence on social media will be suspended or deleted by these social media giants for any reason they make up.  This in itself is shaping and influencing “society” in their image. Do you really want large corporations telling you what is best?
1984 was meant to be a warning, not a guidebook.

This is why we need your help to raise funding. Someone has to do something.

Please email Peter.Boykin@TheMagaNetwork.com for any additional questions.

Thanks

Do You Agree With Comey That Obama’s handling of Russian interference in 2016 election Was Handled Well? #MAGAFirstNews w/ @PeterBoykin

Trump raises tariffs on $200B in Chinese goods; Comey defends Obama’s handling of Russia

Trump administration green-lights tariffs hike on China

The Trump administration moved ahead with increased tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods Friday after a round of trade talks between the U.S. and China on Thursday failed to produce an agreement. The See More new tariffs raised the import taxes of those goods from 10 percent to 25 percent. The White House said talks would continue Friday. The world’s two largest economies were nearing a trade deal to open up the Chinese market to American companies, but negotiations stalled when China called for changes to the text that served as a blueprint for a pact, the New York Times reported. U.S. negotiators have also accused China of reneging on its commitments.

Comey defends Obama’s handling of Russian interference in 2016 election

Former FBI Director James Comey defended President Barack Obama’s handling of Russian interference during the 2016 election, placing more blame on Republican lawmakers for not wanting to disclose Russia’s involvement to the public sooner. During a televised town hall, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asked Comey about President Trump’s repeated criticism of his predecessor for not taking more action against Russia on his watch. “That’s a hard question. President Obama faced a very difficult choice. The No. 1 goal for the Russians is to damage our democracy and undermine faith in our electoral process,” Comey responded. “If he makes an announcement that the Russians are coming for the election, has he just accomplished their goal for them and has he given Donald Trump an excuse to say, ‘Obama fixed the election’? So I get why he struggled with it.” Meanwhile, Fox News Chief Intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge reports that the Justice Department’s inspector general is focusing on how the Democrat-funded anti-Trump dossier was used to secure surveillance warrants for former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page in 2016, despite questions about its credibility.

Tension between the US and North Korea renewed

The United States and North Korea appear to be sending not-so-friendly messages to each other, a far cry from the diplomacy attempted by President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a few months ago during their second summit in February. The U.S. Navy launched an unarmed ballistic missile off the coast of Florida on Thursday hours after North Korea fired two short-range missiles, its second weapons launch in five days. The U.S. Air Force, meanwhile, tested a long-range missile from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California within 10 minutes of the reported launch by Pyongyang. In addition, a North Korean cargo vessel used to transport coal — in violation of international sanctions against the rogue regime — was seized, the U.S. Justice Department announced Thursday. The 17,061-ton vessel, called the Wise Honest, is one of North Korea’s largest bulk carriers used to illicitly ship coal from North Korea and deliver heavy machinery to the Hermit Kingdom, officials said.

The radical AOC-Sanders team-up

Two of the major faces of the Democratic socialist movement teamed up Thursday to unveil a sweeping legislative proposal that even they described as a “radical” crackdown on financial institutions. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., revealed their plans for legislation that would target the credit card and banking industries by capping interest rates at 15 percent. In a joint announcement that streamed live on Twitter and Facebook, they claimed existing practices target people in financial straits. Fox Business anchor Charles Payne, in an appearance Thursday on “America’s Newsroom,” said the AOC-Sanders measure has very little chance of passing the Senate.

Conan settles comedy-theft lawsuit

Conan O’Brien’s team decided to settle a 2015 joke-stealing lawsuit this week. But in a lengthy yet witty op-ed published Thursday, O’Brien defended his writers’ innocence by explaining the honor code of comedy writers. The case against O’Brien, TBS and his production company Conaco was brought by a San Diego-based blogger/Twitterer, Alex Kaseberg, who said O’Brien’s TBS show stole five jokes from his Twitter account and blog. If his show was guilty of anything, O’Brien seemed to imply in the essay, it would be not always being original. In the art of topical joke writing, comedy writers often think up the same punchlines – and this, O’Brien explained, is what happened with regard to Kaseberg. He also wrote that in the age of social media – “and seemingly 60% of [Twitter users are] budding comedy writers” – dozens of people often simultaneously write the same joke. It’s apparently called ‘tweet-saming.’”

‘Pick somebody’ – @RealDonaldTrump taunted the 2020 Democrats at his Florida rally, don’t you just Love #Trump Rallies? #MagaFirstNews w/ .@PeterBoykin

Trump taunts 2020 Democrats; Subpoena stalemate in battle over Mueller report

‘Pick somebody’ – Trump taunts 2020 Democrats at Florida rally
President Trump riffed on his potential opponents in the 2020 presidential election, making jokes at the expense of three of the current Democratic contenders and hoping that See More Democrats quickly “pick somebody” to run against him. Trump appeared to doubt whether South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg could handle complex negotiations with economic rival China. “I want to be in that room, I want to watch that one,” he said. Trump also expressed concern that several foreign leaders want former Vice President Joe Biden to be president. “Of course they do, so they can continue to rip off the United States,” Trump said. “Sleepy Joe and Crazy Bernie [Sanders], I’ll take any of them.”

The president also mused about the recent fortune of former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, saying the Texas Dem’s poll numbers appear to be “falling like a rock.” At the rally, Trump also announced his administration would allocate $448 million in federal aid to communities in Florida affected by last year’s Category 5 Hurricane Michael, all while blasting Democrats standing in the way of his policies. He also called the political crisis in Venezuela “disgraceful.”

North Korea fires at least one projectile into East Sea, days after previous launches: reports

North Korea fired at least one unidentified projectile from a western region north of Pyongyang on Thursday in the country’s second such launch in less than a week, according to South Korean military reports. The launch occurred around 4:30 p.m. local time from the North’s Sino-ri missile base, the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, according to Bloomberg. The base is located around 130 miles north of the border with South Korea.

Migrant surge at US-Mexico border tops 100,000 for second month in a row
More than 100,000 migrants were apprehended or turned away at the southern U.S. border with Mexico in April for the second month in a row, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Wednesday. In the figures released by immigration officials, 109,144 people were encountered trying to enter the U.S. illegally last month. Of those trying to cross, 58,474 were with families, and 8,897 were unaccompanied children. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost told senators Wednesday that apprehension numbers were “off the charts,” and she’s had to divert agents to care for children detained at the border. At his rally in Florida, Trump defended his characterization of the situation at the border as a “national emergency and said Democrats “don’t mind [the] crime” illegal immigrants bring to the U.S.

China threatens retaliation if Trump hikes tariffs

U.S. and Chinese negotiators are scheduled to resume trade talks as President Trump’s threat to hike tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent looms.
In Beijing, Chinese officials said Thursday they will retaliate if Trump follows through on his threat, but they offered no specific details. Tension between the two countries further escalated this week after U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused the Chinese of reneging on commitments they’d made earlier.

Tension between Trump administration and congressional Democrats: Barr held in contempt, Donald Jr. subpoenaed
The House Judiciary Committee voted Wednesday to recommend holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congressfor defying a subpoena for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted Russia report and underlying documents, after President Trump asserted executive privilege in a bid to protect those files from release. Afterward, the House Intelligence Committee subpoenaed the Justice Department for the aforementioned items. Both developments represented a major escalation in the already-tense fight between the two branches of government over access to information the Justice Department says cannot be legally released.

In a separate but related matter, Fox News confirmed that the Senate Intelligence Committee has issued a subpoena for Donald Trump Jr. The subpoena is in regard to remarks President Trump’s oldest son made while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017, the Associated Press reported, citing a person familiar with the situation. The Senate Intelligence Committee has been looking into Russian election interference and Trump’s ties to Russia for the last two years.

A newborn royal — and an old obsession with race

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle introduced their newborn baby, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world on Wednesday, some critics have blasted members of the media for being too obsessed with the baby’s race. Ex-CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien slammed her former network over a lack of diversity on Monday after CNN’s website responded to the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son by asking, “How black will the royal baby be?”

House Judiciary Committee to hold Barr contempt vote; Colorado community reels from school shooting

House Judiciary Committee set to vote on whether to hold Barr in contempt
The House Judiciary Committee is set to proceed Wednesday morning with a vote on whether to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress after late-Tuesday night See More negotiations stalled with the Justice Department over access to the full, unredacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. Barr released a redacted version of the Mueller report last month, but Democrats wanted to see the entire document. In a letter written to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote that, in the face of the committee’s contempt vote, Barr would be “compelled to request that the president invoke executive privilege with respect to the materials subject to the subpoena.”  It remained unclear whether Democrats would seek to hold Barr in civil, criminal, or inherent contempt of Congress. Regardless of which form it takes, a contempt charge against Barr would mark a major opening salvo in what could be a lengthy, acrimonious court battle between House Democrats and President Trump’s administration over Mueller’s report.

Colorado high school shooting leaves at least one dead, eight wounded; Two suspects in custody
Two suspects were in custody Tuesday night after a shooting at a Colorado high school left at least one person dead and eight others injured, according to authorities. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Devon Erickson and a juvenile accomplice. The shooting took place at a STEM school in Highlands Ranch, a Denver suburb only about 7 miles from Littleton, site of the infamous Columbine High School mass murder in 1999.The coroner has not officially identified the student who died, but said the victim was an 18-year-old male. Authorities said they believe both Erickson and the juvenile suspect were students of the school, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said at a news conference. Neither suspect was previously known to authorities, he added.

Appeals court upholds Trump administration policy on asylum seekers
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals late Tuesday granted the Trump administration’s request to send asylum seekers back to Mexico to wait out court proceedings temporarily. The court order reversed a decision by a San Francisco judge that would have blocked the policy — giving President Trump a temporary victory on immigration. The case must still be considered on its merits at a lower court in San Francisco and could end up at the Supreme Court. U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg ruled April 8 that the policy should be halted while a lawsuit, filed on behalf of 11 asylum applicants and several other organizations, proceeds.

Iran pulls out of parts of nuclear deal, sets 60-day deadline to renegotiate terms
Iran’s president said Wednesday the country will stop complying with parts of an Obama-era nuclear deal and set a 60-day deadline for new terms of the landmark pact before resuming higher uranium enrichment.Hassan Rouhani’s national address comes a year after President Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 agreement. He said he wanted to negotiate new terms with the remaining partners in the deal. The breakaway could further escalate tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Reaction to an attempted hacking of Hillary Clinton revealed
Top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin had a brief, but very telling, response in January 2011 when the technician overseeing Clinton’s private home-based email servers told her that someone was trying to hack the secretary of state: “omg.” (“Oh my God!) The revelation was contained in a trove of newly released, partially redacted FBI documents from the agency’s investigation into whether Clinton mishandled classified information — a probe known as the “Midyear Exam.” The document release reveals numerous episodes in which the Clinton team either suspected it had been hacked or seemingly acknowledged that security measures had come up short.

Tiger praised for ‘not conforming’ to Trump haters
Tiger Woods was chided Monday night moments after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom award from President Trump. His remarkable victory at the Masters a month earlier seemed like a distant memory. Some critics questioned whether he deserved the award; other noted his business dealings with the Trump organization. Some argued that Woods would be forever tainted for his association with Trump. The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board was particularly scathing, writing that it “wish[ed] Mr. Woods would have taken a stand against hatred and declined the award given the racial and ethnic rift Mr. Trump has widened and exploited in the country since taking office.” Still, Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce praised Woods for standing by his relationship with Trump. “He likes the president,” she said on “The Story with Martha MacCallum.”  “I’m glad that he’s not conforming.” Bruce called Woods “the perfect recipient of the Medal of Freedom.”
